Leo 114 was allegedly the archbishop of Ravenna at the date of the Council of Rome in 769 and was there represented by Valentinus 3 and Ioannes 237: Lib. Pont. 96. 17 ("presentantes locum domno Leone archiepiscopo civitate Ravennate"). This is an error; the archbishop Sergius (Sergios 54) was still alive at the date of the Council; cf. Sergios 5. Leo 114 was archdeacon at Ravenna when Sergios 54 died and was expected to be his successor; however the post was seized by Michael 54 with help from the dux of Ariminum, Mauricius (Maurikios 9), and Leo 114 was arrested, deported to Ariminum and held in custody by Maurikios 9: Lib. Pont. 96. 25. Over a year later Michael 54 was expelled and Leo 114, archdeacon of the church of Ravenna ("archidiaconus huius ecclesiae") was installed as archbishop of Ravenna, receiving consecration in Rome at the hands of pope Stephen IV (III) (Stephanos 84): Lib. Pont. 96. 26. In 772 Leo 114 and the people of Ravenna sent envoys (see Ioulianos 8, Petros 7 and Bitalianos 4) to ask the pope, Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1), to intervene with the Lombard king Desiderius (Desiderios 3) and secure the return of cities and properties seized by him, since he was causing intolerable shortages at Ravenna: Lib. Pont. 97. 7. Later that year, when the truth concerning the murder of Sergios 53 began to emerge, secret instructions were sent by Hadrianos 1 to Leo 114 ("Leoni archiepiscopo Ravennantium civitatis") to arrest Paulus Afiarta (Paulos 51), and he had him seized and held in custody at Ariminum: Lib. Pont. 97. 9. Following the trial of Calvulus 1, Lunisso and Leonatius (Lounisso 1 and Leonatios 1) at Rome for their role in the murder, Hadrianos 1 sent a transcript of their trial to Leo 114 for Paulos 51 to understand his position; instead, Leo 114, without instructions from Hadrianos 1, handed Paulos 51 over to the consularis of Ravenna (Anonymus 264) to stand trial; he then failed to inform Hadrianos 1 of what he had done: Lib. Pont. 97. 14. He received from the pope a request to send Paulos 51 to Constantinople to go into exile, but Leo 114 prevaricated and avoided doing so (cf. Anonymus 265): Lib. Pont. 97. 15. A papal envoy (Gregorios 78) was then sent with orders for Leo 114 to keep Paulos 51 safe and allow him to return to Rome with the envoy, but Leo 114 had Paulos 51 killed first by the consularis of Ravenna (Anonymus 264); when the envoy protested, Leo 114 sent a message to the pope claiming that he had acted to avenge the murder of Sergios 53: Lib. Pont. 97. 16-17.
