Leonatios 1 was a native of Anagnia and a tribunus; in 772 he and his fellow Anagnian Lunisso (Lounisso 1) accompanied Calventzulus 1 to the cell where the secundicerius Sergius (Sergios 53) was held ("cum Lunissone presbitero et Leonatio tribuno, habitatoribus civitatis Anagnine"); Calventzulus 1 removed Sergios 53 and handed him over to Leonatios 1 and Lounisso 1; the date was eight days before the death of pope Stephen IV (III) (Stephanos 84); at an investigation under pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1), Calventzulus 1 admitted that he had received orders from Paulus Afiarta (Paulos 51), Gregorios 77, Ioannes 239 (brother of pope Stephen IV (III) (Stephanos 84)) and Calvulus 1 to hand Sergios 53 over to Leonatios 1 and Lounisso 1: Lib. Pont. 97. 10. They were brought back to Rome from Anagnia by pope Hadrianos 1's men and admitted that they had received orders from those four men to remove Sergios 53 and to kill him; they then escorted papal servants to the place where they had killed and buried Sergios 53, at Merulana, near a painted arch by the road leading to the Church of St Maria Maggiore: Lib. Pont. 97. 11. The incident caused strong feelings at Rome, and pope Hadrianos 1 had the two men, together with Calvulus 1, handed over to the praefectus urbi for trial; they were held in the Elephant prison; at their trial, which was in public, Lounisso 1 and Leonatios 1 admitted their guilt, and they were then sent into exile at Constantinople ("pro vero amputandis tantis intolerabilibus flagitii reatibus missi sunt ipsi Campanini Constantinopolim in exilium"): Lib. Pont. 97. 12-13 (they are alluded to as "praenominati Campanini" or similar). The account of their trial was sent to Ravenna by Hadrianos 1 for the information of Paulos 51 (Paulus Afiarta): Lib. Pont. 97. 14.
