Ioannes 239 was dux at Rome; brother of pope Stephen IV (III) (Stephanos 84) (therefore he was also a native of Sicily and son of Olibos 1); in early 772 he was one of the four persons who ordered the abduction and murder of the secundicerius Sergius (Sergios 53): Lib. Pont. 97. 10 ("Iohanne duce, germano domni Stephani pape"), 97. 11 ("Iohanne, germano praefati domni Stephani pape"). The other three were Paulos 51, Gregorios 77 and Calvulus 1. See also Calventzulus 1, Lounisso 1 and Leonatios 1.
