Calvulus 1 was a cubicularius, at Rome; he is described as one of the evil colleagues of Paulus Afiarta (Paulos 51): Lib. Pont. 97. 10 ("Calvulo cubiculario"), 97. 11 ("Calvulo, idem cubiculario et maligno consentaneo sepefati Pauli"). Calvulus 1 was one of the four persons who ordered that the secundicerius Sergios 53 be removed from his cell and handed over to the Campanians Lunisso (Lounisso 1) and Leonatius (Leonatios 1), who maltreated and killed him; Calvulus 1's role was revealed by the cubicularius Calventzulus 1 during an investigation under pope Hadrian (Hadrianos 1): Lib. Pont. 97. 10. The story received confirmation from Lounisso 1 and Leonatios 1: Lib. Pont. 97. 11. The other three involved were Paulos 51, Gregorios 77 and Ioannes 239. The incident aroused great popular anger and the Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1) ordered Calvulus 1, Lounisso 1 and Leonatios 1 to be surrendered to the praefectus urbi for trial; they were held in the Elephant prison and brought to face trial publicly; the two others admitted their role, but not Calvulus 1; he was held in prison and died there ("Calvulus vero, obdurans cor suum, vix confessus est ita se omnia esse. Qui tamen in eodem carcere crudeli morte amisit spiritum"): Lib. Pont. 97. 12-13. An account of the trial was sent by pope Hadrianos 1 to Ravenna, for the information of Paulus Afiarta (Paulos 51): Lib. Pont. 97. 14.
