Maurikios 9 was dux of Ariminum; after the death of the archbishop of Ravenna, Sergius (Sergios 54) (on 25 August 769), Maurikios 9 was visited in Ariminum by the scriniarius Michael 54 for his support in securing Michael 54's election to the see ("profectus Arimino ad Mauricium ducem Ariminensem"); with the approval of the Lombard king Desiderius (Desiderios 3) Maurikios 9 assembled an army and hastened to Ravenna; through superior force Maurikios 9 had Michael 54 elected as archbishop and deported the expected successor of Sergios 54, Leo 114, to Ariminum where he detained him under guard; Maurikios 9, Michael 54 and the authorities at Ravenna ("iudices Ravennantium") promised gifts to pope Stephen IV (III) (Stephanos 84) if he would consecrate Michael 54, but Stephanos 84 refused because Michael 54 was not a priest; after a year had passed Michael 54 was eventually ousted and Leo 114 elected as archbishop: Lib. Pont. 96. 25-26.
