Gregorios 78 was sacellarius of the bishop of Rome, Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1) ("Gregorium saccellarium suum"); sent as papal envoy to the Lombard king Desiderius (Desiderios 3) in 772 at Ticinum to discuss the return of cities seized by the Lombards. En route he ordered the archbishop of Ravenna, Leo 114, and the public authorities of the city, in the presence of another papal envoy, Anvald 1, to keep Paulus Afiarta (Paulos 51) safe until his return from Ticinum, when he had instructions from the pope to take him back to Rome: Lib. Pont. 97. 16. On his return from Ticinum he found that Leo 114 had had Paulos 51 executed, and he strongly rebuked him for disobeying the pope's instructions; pope Hadrianos 1 later alludes to him as "meum sacellarium": Lib. Pont. 97. 17.
