Ioannes 237 was a deacon; in 769 he and Valentinus 3 attended the Council of Rome as representatives of the archbishop of Ravenna (here named as Leo; in fact Sergius still held the post; see Leo 114 and Sergios 54): Lib. Pont. 96. 17 ("Valentinus presbiter et Iohannes diaconus, presentantes locum domno Leone archiepiscopo civitate Ravennate"). They were presumably clergy in the church at Ravenna.
