Arn 1 was a Frankish archbishop; he was one of the envoys (missi) sent by Charlemagne (Karoulos 1) to escort pope Leo III (Leo 11) back from Francia to Rome in 800; the other missi were the archbishop Hildebald 1, the bishops Cunipert 1, Bernard 1, Atto 2 and Iesse 1, a bishop elect, Erflaic 1, and three comites, Helmgoth 1, Rottecar 1 and Germar 1; in Rome they investigated allegations against the pope Leo 11 and, finding them baseless, arrested the accusers and sent them to Francia: Lib. Pont. 98. 20, cf. 98. 18 (Charlemagne sent high ranking clergy, his own royal council and the leaders of the Franks to escort pope Leo III back to Rome). They were presumably all present when Karoulos 1 visited Rome shortly afterwards and received the imperial crown from the hands of Leo 11: Lib. Pont. 98. 21-23.
