Helmgoth 1 was a Frankish comes; he was one of three comites sent by Charlemagne (Karoulos 1) in 800 with other envoys ("missi") to escort pope Leo III (Leo 11) back from Francia to Rome; the other two comites were Germar 1 and Rottecar 1 ("Helmgoth, Rottecario et Germario gloriosissimis comitibus"); in Rome the envoys investigated allegations against the pope and, finding them baseless, arrested the accusers and sent them to Francia: Lib. Pont. 98. 20, cf. 98. 18 (Karoulos 1 sent high ranking clergy, his own royal council and leaders of the Franks on this embassy). They were all presumably present when Karoulos 1 shortly afterwards visited Rome and there received the imperial crown from the hands of pope Leo III (Leo 11): Lib. Pont. 98. 21-23. The three comites were all perhaps members of Karoulos 1's royal council. For the other envoys, see Arn 1. Called Helmgaud; he was a comes and a Frank; in 802 he and Iesse 1 were sent by Charlemagne (Karoulos 1) on an embassy to the empress Eirene 1 in Constantinople, in response to an embassy from her (see Leo 279), to discuss peace: Annales Regni Francorum s.a. 802. They returned in the following year with envoys of the new emperor Nikephoros I (Nikephoros 8), who had overthrown Eirene 1 after the arrival of the Frankish envoys in Constantinople; the imperial envoys were Michael 6, Petros 140 and Kallistos 16: Annales Regni Francorum s.a. 803.
