Iesse 1 was the Frankish bishop (of Amiens); he was one of the envoys ("missi") sent by Charlemagne (Karoulos 1) in 800 to escort pope Leo III (Leo 11) back to Rome from Francia; in Rome the envoys investigated allegations against the pope and, finding them baseless, arrested the accusers and sent them to Francia: Lib. Pont. 98. 20, cf. 98. 18 (Karoulos 1 sent high ranking clergy, his own royal council and leaders of the Franks to escort the pope). The envoys were presumably all present when Karoulos 1 arrived in Rome shortly afterwards and there received the imperial crown from the hands of the pope: Lib. Pont. 98. 21-23. For the members of the embassy, see Arn 1. Bishop of Amiens; in 802 he and Helmgaud (Helmgoth 1) were sent by Karoulos 1 on an embassy to the empress Eirene 1 in Constantinople, in response to an embassy from her (see Leo 279), to discuss peace: Annales Regni Francorum s.a. 802. They returned in the following year with envoys of the new emperor Nicephorus (Nikephoros 8), who had overthrown Eirene after the Frankish envoys had arrived in Constantinople; the imperial envoys were Michael 6, Petros 140 and Kallistos 16: Annales Regni Francorum s.a. 803.
