Hildebald 1 was the Frankish archbishop (of Cologne) and capellanus of Charlemagne (Karoulos 1); in 799 he and the comes Ascheric 1 were sent by Karoulos 1 to meet the bishop of Rome, pope Leo III (Leo 11), who was en route to Francia to see Karoulos 1: Lib. Pont. 98. 16 ("Hildebaldo archiepiscopo et capellano"). In 800 he was one of two archbishops (see Arn 1) sent with other envoys ("missi") by Karoulos 1 to escort the pope Leo III (Leo 11) back to Rome from Francia; in Rome the envoys investigated allegations against the pope and, finding them baseless, arrested the accusers and sent them to Francia: Lib. Pont. 98. 20, cf. 98. 18 (Karoulos 1 sent high ranking clergy, his own royal council and leaders of the Franks to escort the pope). The envoys were presumably all present when Karoulos 1 visited Rome shortly afterwards and received the imperial crown from the hands of Leo III (Leo 11): Lib. Pont. 98. 21-23. They arrived in Rome on 29 November (the eve of the feast of St Andrew) and the act of coronation took place on 25 December: Lib. Pont. 98. 19, 23.
