Atto 2 was a Frankish bishop (of Freising); in 800 he was one of the envoys (missi) sent by Charlemagne (Karoulos 1) to escort the bishop of Rome, Leo III (Leo 11), back to Rome; in Rome they investigetd allegations against Leo 11 and, finding them baseless, arrested the accusers and sent them to Francia: Lib. Pont. 98. 20, cf. 98. 18 (Charlemagne sent high ranking clergy, his own royal council and leaders of the Franks to escort the pope). They were probably present when Karoulos 1 visited Rome shortly afterwards and received the imperial crown from the hands of pope Leo 11: Lib. Pont. 98. 21-23. For the other members of the embassy, see Arn 1.
