Erflaic 1 was a Frankish bishop elect ("Erflaico electo episcopo") (his see is not recorded); in 800 he was one of the envoys ("missi") sent by Charlemagne (Karoulos 1) to escort pope Leo III (Leo 11) back from Francia to Rome; in Rome they investigated allegations against the pope and, finding them baseless, arrested the accusers and sent them to Francia: Lib. Pont. 98. 20, cf. 98. 18 (Charlemagne sent high ranking clergy, his own royal council and leaders of the Franks to escort the pope). For the other members of the embassy, see Arn 1. They were presumably all present in Rome when Charlemagne (Karoulos 1) arrived shortly afterwards and received the imperial crown from the hands of the pope: Lib. Pont. 98. 21-23.
