Thaddaios 1 was a Stoudite monk; he was a "Scythian" (possibly meaning a Bulgar), formerly a slave, who after emancipation entered the monastery and later died as a martyr: Theod. Stud., Catech. Parva 29, 43, cf. Catech. Parva 133. In 816 he was the addressee of two letters from Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite): Theod. Stud. Ep. 126, p. 244, line 2; 183, p. 305, line 2. During the persecution under Leo V (Leo 15) he was one of a group of ten Stoudite monks who all suffered punishments and beatings as supporters of the veneration of icons; Thaddaios 1 died in 816 as a result of his injuries: Theod. Stud., Ep. 185, p. 307, line 9; 186, p. 308, line 7 (he was given 130 lashes); 187, p. 310, line 7; 188, p. 311, line 11; 190, p. 314, line 20; 191, p. 315, line 180; 194, p. 318, line 21; 195, p. 318, line 5; 198, p. 321, line 22; 199, p. 322, line 12 (all L 816/E 817); 204, p. 326, line 7 (E/M 817); 251, p. 383, line 6 (817); 301, p. 440, line 45 (817/818); 381, p. 521, line 18 (E 819). Stud., ¤¤55-56, p. 291 (τὸν ἀοίδιμον Θαδδαῖον, τοῦ ὁσιομάρτυρος Θαδδαίου), Vita A Theod. Stud. 204D. The date of his death was either 22 November or 29 December: Synax. Eccl. Const. 353-356. His burial service was performed by Theophylaktos 111: Theod. Stud., Ep. 251.
