Philaretos 3 was a grandson of Philaretos 1 (St Philaretos), fourth son of Eirene 2 and Ioannes 12, brother of Bardas 1, Eustathios 1, Niketas 8, Helene 1, Euphemia 1 and Hypatia 3: Nicetas, Vita Philareti, p. 141, line 28 (ὁ τέταρτος παῖς Φιλάρετος). Like his older brother Eustathios 1, Philaretos 3 died young after donating his wealth to the poor and his estates to the monastery of St George, where he too was buried: Nicetas, Vita Philareti, p. 157, lines 1-10. The family was of Armenian descent; see Maria 2.
