Eustathios 1 was a grandson of St Philaretos (Philaretos 1), second son of Ioannes 12 and Eirene 2, brother of Bardas 1, Niketas 8, Philaretos 3, Helene 1, Euphemia 1 and Hypatia 3: Nicetas, Vita S. Philareti, p. 141, lines 27-28 (ὁ δεύτερος Εὐστάθιος). The second son of Ioannes 12, he died in his twenty-fourth year after giving his wealth to the poor and bequeathing his estates to the monastery of Hagios Georgios "Ta Praipositou", where he was buried: Nicetas, Vita S. Philareti, p. 155, lines 17ff. The family was of Armenian descent; see Maria 2.
