Euphemia 1 was a granddaughter of St Philaretos (Philaretos 1), daughter of Ioannes 12 and Eirene 2, sister of Bardas 1, Eustathios 1, Niketas 8, Philaretos 3, Helene 1 and Hypatia 3: Nicetas, Vita S. Philareti, p. 141, line 29 (called Εὐφημία). The second daughter of Ioannes 12, she and her sister Helene 1 became nuns in the convent of the Theotokos at the Gate of Pemptos; both of them died after twelve years there: Nicetas, Vita S. Philareti, p. 159, line 11 (called Εὐφημοῦ). The family was of Armenian descent; see Maria 2.
