Bardas 1 was the eldest son (ὁ πρῶτος Βάρδας) of Eirene 2 and Ioannes 12; he was therefore the grandson of St Philaretos 1 and the brother of Eustathios 1, Niketas 8, Philaretos 3, Helene 1, Euphemia 1 and Hypatia 3; he was the only son to marry and had seven children: Nicetas, Vita Philareti, p. 141, line 27, p. 155, lines 12-16. The family was of Armenian descent; see Maria 2.
