Alahis 1 was the Lombard dux of Tridentum ("hic dum dux esset in Tredentina civitate"); he fought and won a startling victory over the comes Baioariorum (Anonymus 315); he then rebelled against king Perctarit 1 (after Perctarit associated Cunincpert 1 on the throne with him, therefore in 678/679 - 688/689) and fortified Tridentum against him; he was besieged by Perctarit but made an unexpected sally and put the king to flight; he was uneasily reconciled with Perctarit 1 through Cunincpert 1, whom he had befriended long before; Cunincpert 1 allegedly opposed Perctarit 1's attempts to have him killed and claimed that he was loyal; he asked for Alahis 1 to be made dux of Brixia, which Perctarit 1 refused as it would have made him much too powerful: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. V 36. During the sole reign of Cunincpert 1, while the king was absent from Ticinum, Alahis 1 rebelled, supported by Aldo 1 and Grauso 1, and occupied Ticinum; he was hostile to the clergy, whom he treated disdainfully and who accordingly were strongly opposed to him (see Damianos 11 and Thomas 28): Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. V 38. He soon antagonised his supporters Aldo 1 and Grauso 1 (cf. Anonymus 313), who sought to overthrow him and restore Cunincpert 1; they persuaded him to leave Ticinum and go hunting, and during his absence brought Cunincpert 1 back; Alahis 1 withdrew through Placentia to Austria, winning over to his side all the cities through which he passed, including Tarvisium and Forum Iulii, by force or persuasion; finally he and Cunincpert 1 made camp opposite one another in the plain of Coronate (Kornate, near the Addua): Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. V 39. Cunincpert 1 challenged him to single combat but he refused, knowing from earlier times his great strength (cf. Anonymus 314); the parties joined battle and Alahis 1 killed the deacon Seno 1, believing him to be Cunincpert 1: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. V 40. Eventually Alahis 1 was killed and his men were defeated and fled; Alahis 1 had again refused a challenge to single combat, claiming to see among the king's spears an image of the archangel Michael on which he had formerly sworn an oath of loyalty to him (and cf. Anonymus 316): Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. V 41. He and Cunincpert 1 fought a battle on the plain of Coronate: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 17.
