Presumably a Lombard, Seno 1 was a deacon of the church at Ticinum and the guardian of the Basilica of St John the Baptist built there by queen Gundiperga (see PLRE III, s.n. Gundoberga) ("Seno diaconus Ticinensis ecclesiae, qui custus erat basilicae beati Iohannis baptistae, quae intra eadem sita est civitatem"); a devoted follower of king Cunincpert 1, he was with him at the battle of Coronate against Alahis 1; he was the same size and appearance as Cunincpert 1 and therefore, at his own suggestion, he dressed in Cunincpert 1's armour and fought in the battle, to take the risk on himself; he was killed in the battle by Alahis 1 but Cunincpert 1 himself then took his place and finally won the day; subsequently Seno 1 was given a magnificent burial by the king at Ticinum in front of his Basilica of St John ("ante fores basilicae beati Iohannis, quam ipse rexerat"): Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. V 40-41. Cunincpert 1 was sole king from 678/679 to 688/689.
