Nikolaos 49 was the bishop of Anagnia; after the election of Benedict III (Benediktos 7) as bishop of Rome in 855, Nycolaus (sic) and the magister militum Mercurius (Merkourios 3) were sent to deliver the decree of the clergy and leaders of Rome announcing the decision to the emperors Lothar and Louis II (Lotharios 1 and Lodoïchos 1); en route they met Arsenius (Arsenios 3) at Iguvium and were persuaded by him to give their support instead to the rival claimant Anastasius (Anastasios 25); they delivered the decree to Lodoïchos 1 and returned to Rome, planning to promote the cause of Anastasius: Lib. Pont. 106. 6-7 ("Nycolaus videlicet Anagninae antistes ecclesiae"). After the imperial envoys Adalbert 2 and Bernard 3 arrived at Horta and were in turn persuaded by Arsenios 3 to support Anastasios 25, Nikolaos 49 and Merkourios 3, accompanied by two other magistri militum, Christophoros 30 and Gregorios 93, left Rome for Horta to meet the Frankish envoys and to add their support to the cause of Anastasius: Lib. Pont. 106. 9 ("Nycolaus episcopus"). Probably identical with Nikolaos 48.
