Lotharios 1 was the Frankish emperor Lothair I. Father of Louis II (Lodoïchos 1); in 844, learning that Sergius II (Sergios 60) had been elected bishop of Rome, he sent his son, Lodoïchos 1, with Drogo 1 and an escort of clergy and nobles, to Rome: Lib. Pont. 104. 8 ("invictissimi Augusti Lotharii"). An oath of loyalty to Lotharios 1 was taken at Rome by pope Sergios 60, by Lodoïchos 1, and by the assembled clergy and the Frankish and Roman leaders ("Romanorum et Francorum optimatibus"): Lib. Pont. 104. 15 ("fidelitatem Lothario magno imperatori semper Augusto promiserunt"). In return for lavish gifts he (allegedly) conferred absolute authority over Rome on the brother of pope Sergios 60, Benedictus (Benediktos 6): Lib. Pont. 104. 41, cf. Duchesne, Lib. Pont. II, p. 103, n. 30 (he perhaps only made him missus et apocrisiarius of the apostolic see). He gave his support to the construction by pope Leo IV (Leo 121) of new defences for St Peter's: Lib. Pont. 105. 69 (and see Duchesne, Lib. Pont. II, p. 137, n. 46; the scheme was initiated by Lotharios 1 while Sergios 60 was still alive, in late 846). His image, with that of the pope himself, was included by pope Leo IV (Leo 121) at the newly restored shrine of St Peter: Lib. Pont. 105. 33. Lotharios 1 died in the monastery of Prum on 29 September 855, having abdicated and retired from the world on 23 September; see Duchesne, Lib. Pont. II, p. 148, n. 2.
