Adalbert 2 was a Frank: Lib. Pont. 106. 16. He was a comes ("Adelvertus Bernardusque ... comites"): Lib. Pont. 106. 8. In 855, following the election as bishop of Rome of Benedict III (Benediktos 7), Adalbert 2 and Bernard 3 were sent to Rome as envoys ("imperiales legati; missi") of the emperor Louis II (Lodoïchos 1): Lib. Pont. 106. 7-8. At Horta (forty miles from Rome) they were persuaded by Arsenios 3 to support the claims of Anastasios 25 and by the time they arrived at the Basilica of St. Leucius (five miles from Rome) they had been joined by several of Anastasios' supporters; there they arrested envoys from Benediktos 7 (Georgios 167 and Maio 1): Lib. Pont. 106. 8-10. After their entry into Rome they tried all means to induce the clergy and people to elect Anastasios 25 but met solid opposition and eventually abandoned the attempt (after conferring together in their own language - "secretius lingua eorum confabulantes": Lib. Pont. 106. 16) and agreed to allow the consecration of Benediktos 7 to proceed: Lib. Pont. 106. 11-17. They then met Benediktos 7 for secret discussions and afterwards were present in person in St Peter's when Benediktos 7 was finally consecrated as bishop of Rome: Lib. Pont. 106. 19-20.
