Marinos 12 was a imperialis spatharius and dux of Rome, sent out from Constantinople; on orders from the emperor he supported the plot of Basilios 55, Iordanes 2 and Ioannes 232 to murder pope Gregory II (Gregorios 72) ("quibus assensum Marinus imperialis spatarius, qui Romanum ducatum tenebat a regia missus urbe, imperatore mandante hoc, praebuit"); the plot failed when they could not find an opportunity to kill the pope, and then Marinos 12 fell ill and had to leave Rome ("qui Dei iudicio dissolutus contractus est et sic a Roma recessit"): Lib. Pont. 91. 14. See also Anonymus 239. The date was probably in the earlier part of the pontificate of Gregorios 72; see Iordanes 2. Cf. also Marinos 23.
