Ioannes 232 also bore the name Lurion (either a nickname or a family name) and was a subdeacon ("Iohannis subdiaconus cognomento Lurion"); he conspired with Basilios 55 and Iordanes 2 to murder pope Gregory II (Gregorios 72); they received the support of the emperor Leo III (Leo 3) through Marinos 12; the attempt failed when they could not find an opportunity to kill him: Lib. Pont. 91. 14. Later they conspired again to kill Gregorios 72, this time with official support from Paulos 48; the plot was discovered by the people of Rome and Ioannes 232 and Iordanes 2 were killed ("qui moti cuncti Iordannem interfecerunt et Iohannem Lurionem"), while Basilios 55 was made a monk: Lib. Pont. 91. 15. The date was probably in the earlier part of the pontificate of Gregorios 72; see Iordanes 2. Ioannes 232 was presumably a subdeacon at Rome.
