Godepert 1 was the son of Charibert 1 (Aripert I); brother of Perctarit 1; father of Raginpert 1 (still a little child when Godepert 1 was killed); he also had a sister (Anonyma 48); when their father died (in 661) Godepert 1 and his brother Perctarit 1 were both adolescents; on the death of Charibert 1 they succeeded to the kingdom, Godepert 1 making his capital at Ticinum and Perctarit 1 at Milan; they began to endanger the kingdom with their quarrels and attacks on one another and Godepert 1, seeking aid against his brother, sent Garipald 1 to the dux of Beneventum, Grimoald 3, for assistance, and promised him his sister (Anonyma 48) in marriage; Grimoald 3, however, was persuaded to aim for the throne himself and at Ticinum, following scheming by Garipald 1, he killed Godepert 1 and seized his kingdom; vengeance for Godepert 1 on Garipald 1 was taken by a dwarf (Anonymus 309) who had grown up in Godepert 1's household at Ticinum: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. IV 51, cf. V 2 (brother of Anonyma 48; killed by Grimoald 3). King Godepert 1 ("rex Godipertus") was killed by Grimoald 3 but was survived by his young son Raginpert 1: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 18
