Garipald was Lombard dux of Turin ("Taurinatium ducem"); he was sent by king Godepert 1 to the dux of Beneventum, Grimoald 3, to ask for help against the other Lombard king, Godepert 1's brother Perctarit 1; instead he persuaded Grimoald 3 to aim for the throne himself, since the brothers were endangering the kingdom; when Grimoald 3 arrived in Ticinum, Garipald 1 secured him residence in the palace and then plotted the assassination of Godepert 1 by Grimoald 3; he is depicted as a traitor and is accused of failing to deliver to Grimoald 3 all the gifts sent by Godepert 1 to Beneventum; he was eventually killed by a dwarf (Anonymus 309) who had grown up in the household of Godepert 1, to avenge his master: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. IV 51.
