Ansprand 1 was the husband of Theodorada 2, father of Sigiprand 1, Liutprand 1 and Aurona 1: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 22. Described as a wise and famous man among the Lombards, he was appointed by king Cunincpert 1 as guardian to Cunincpert's son, Liutpert 1, when Liutpert inherited the kingdom while still a child: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 17 ("cui tutorem Ansprandum, virum sapientem et inlustrem, contribuit"), cf. VI 35 ("vir per omnia egregius et cuius sapientiae rari aequandi sunt"). After eight months the army of Liutpert 1, led by Ansprand 1 and Rotharit 1, was defeated at Novaria by Raginpert 1, who then seized the kingdom: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 18. After Raginpert 1's death, another battle was fought at Ticinum by Raginpert's son Aripert II (Aripert 1) against the army of Liutpert 1 under the command of Ansprand 1, Ato 1, Tatzo 1, Rotharit 1 and Farao 1; they were defeated by Aripert 1, Liutpert 1 was captured and Ansprand 1 fled for refuge to the island of Commacina: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 19. Later Aripert 1 sent an army against him and Ansprand 1 fled from Commacina, first to Clavenna (Chiavenna) and then via Curia, a city of the Raeti, to the Bavarians, where he took refuge with Theutpert 1, dux of the Bavarians, and remained there for nine years: Paul. Diac. Hist., Lang. VI 21. Aripert 1 then took measures against the relatives of Ansprand 1, blinding his son Sigiprand 1 and afflicting all his other relatives in some way; his wife Theodorada 2 had her nose and ears cut; only Liutprand 1, Ansprand 1's younger son, was not touched, because he was already ugly and was still young; he was allowed to go to rejoin Ansprand 1 in Bavaria: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 22. In the tenth year of Ansprand 1's exile among the Bavarians (in 712), the Bavarian dux Theutpert 1 invaded Italy and attacked Aripert 1, who lost his life; Ansprand 1 then became king of the Lombards, but survived for only three months before he died; he was succeeded by his son Liutprand 1, whose accession was reported to him shortly before he died: Paul. Diac., Hist.Lang. VI 35.
