Theutpert 1 was dux of the Bavarians ("Baioariorum ducem"); he gave refuge to the Lombard Ansprand 1 for nine years: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 21. In the tenth year he is said to have been promoted leader of the Bavarians ("promoto tandem Teutperto decimo anno Baioariorum ductor" - perhaps he was not sole ruler of the Bavarians until now, but the explanation of the contradiction is unclear); in this year he led his army into Italy and attacked Aripert II (Aripert 1); he was defeated but after the battle Aripert 1 withdrew to Ticinum, disheartening his own men and encouraging the Bavarians; Aripert 1 died soon afterwards while attempting to flee and Ansprand 1 took the Lombard throne: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 35. He had a daughter, Guntrut 1, who subsequently married the Lombard king Liutprand 1, and bore him one child, a daughter (Anonyma 50): Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 43. They presumably met while Liutprand 1 was in exile with his father (Ansprand 1) at the court of Theutpert 1 (c. 702-712).
