Waldipert 1 was a Lombard priest; he accompanied Sergios 53 with a force of men from Reate and Furcona and with Lombards from the duchy of Spoletium to Rome, arriving at the Pons Salaria on 29 July 768 and entering the city on the following day; they remained on the Ianiculum: Lib. Pont. 96. 7-8. On the Sunday following the overthrow of the antipope Constantine (Konstantinos 140), without the knowledge of Sergios 53, Waldipert 1 with some Romans took the priest Philippos 11 from the monastery of St Vitus and proclaimed him pope; they then escorted him to the Lateran palace: Lib. Pont. 96. 10. Shortly after the election as pope of Stephen IV (III) (Stephanos 84), Waldipert 1 was accused of plotting with Theodicius (Theodikios 1) and some Romans to murder Christophoros 26 and other leading Romans and surrender Rome to the Lombards; men were sent to arrest him and he fled for refuge to the church of Santa Maria ad Martyres, but was dragged out from there (by Christophoros 27), even though he was carrying an image of the Mother of God, and was imprisoned in a cell in the prison called Ferrata; after a few days Waldipert 1 was taken from there, his eyes were put out, his tongue was cut out and he was sent to the xenodochium Valerii where he subsequently died as a result of the blinding: Lib. Pont. 96. 15 ("Waldipertus presbiter, Langobardorum genere hortus").
