Toto 1 was a long time resident of Nepe (in Tuscia), brother of Constantinus (Konstantinos 140), Passibus (Passibos 1) and Paschalis 2, and a dux in 767; when pope Paul (Paulos 49) lay dying, Toto gathered a force of soldiers and peasants from Nepe and other cities of Tuscia and entered Rome through the Porta Pancratii; they assembled under arms at the house of Toto in Rome ("in domo antedicti Totonis") and proclaimed Toto's brother Constantinus (Konstantinos 140) as the next pope; they then burst into the Lateran palace and forced bishop Georgios 131 of Praeneste to make him a cleric: Lib. Pont. 96. 3. When in 768 Sergios 53 arrived in Rome with Lombard troops, Toto went to see them, not knowing that they planned to depose Constantinus; he killed a Lombard, Racipert 1, who attacked him, but as the Lombards turned to flee he was himself killed, attacked in the rear by Demetrios 16 and Gratiosos 3: Lib. Pont. 96. 9.
