Romoald 2 was the son of the Lombard dux of Beneventum, Gisulf 1, and Winiperga 1: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 2. Husband of Gumperga 1 and Ranigunda 1, and father of Gisulf 2; see below. He was named after his grandfather, Romoald 1, and so is styled "Romualdus iunior": Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 55 (cited below). On his father's death Romoald 2 succeeded him as ruler of the Samnites (i.e. as dux of Beneventum): Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 39 ("defuncto itaque Gisulfo Beneventano duce, Samnitum populum Romuald, eius filius, regendum suscepit"). Dux of Beneventum; he first married Gumperga 1, daughter of Aurona 1 and a niece of the Lombard king Liutprand 1, by whom he had a son, Gisulf 2; later he married Ranigunda 1, daughter of the Lombard dux of Brixia, Gaidoald 1: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 50. He was dux of Beneventum for twenty-six years; he was succeeded on his death by his son Gisulf 2, who was still a child: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 55 ("mortuo autem Romualdo iuniore Beneventanorum duce, qui viginti et sex ducatum tenuerat annis").
