Gisulf 2 was a Lombard, he was the son of Romoald 2 and Gumperga 1, and was named after his grandfather, Gisulf 1: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 50. He was a nephew of the Lombard king Liutprand 1: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 50, 55, 58. He was still a child when his father died and attempts were made to kill him and prevent him from succeeding his father as dux of Beneventum; the people rose in his favour and saved his life; Liutprand 1 intervened and, because of the youth of Gisulf 2, his nephew, appointed Gregorios 80, another nephew, as dux and took Gisulf into his care, attending to his education ("paterna pietate erudiens") and marrying him to a noble lady, Scauniperga 1: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 55. Later, followers of his among the people of Beneventum attacked and killed Godescalc 1 (successor of Gregorios 80): Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 57. The king then visited Beneventum and Gisulf 2 was again appointed dux of Beneventum ("tunc rex Liutprandum (sic) Beneventum perveniens Gisulfum, suum nepotem, iterum in loco proprio ducem constituit"): Paul. Diac. Hist., Lang. VI 58.
