Known as Rizocopus, Ioannes 230 was patricius and exarchus in Italy ("Iohannes patricius et exarchus cognomento Rizocopus"); in 710, probably in October, he encountered pope Constantine (Konstantinos 136) and his retinue at Naples en route for Constantinople; Ioannes 230 went from there to Rome, where he cut the throats of four church officials (Saioulos 1, Petros 66, Sergios 47 and Sergios 48); he then went on to Ravenna, where he is said by the judgement of God to have met a shameful death worthy of his horrendous deeds ("pergens Ravennam proque suis nefandissimis factis iudicio Dei illic turpissima morte occubuit"): Lib. Pont. 90. 4. Rizocopus is presumably a nickname rather than his family name.
