Patriarch of Antioch, Eustathios 48 was the addressee of a letter from the patriarch Photius (Photios 1), written between 861 and 867, possibly between April 862 and April 866; Photios 1 looked forward to a visit from Eustathios 48, in spite of the problems of travel; Eustathios 48 is styled σου τὴν ἱερατικὴν τελειότητα and addressed as πατέρων καὶ ἀδελφῶν ἄριστε: Photius, Ep. 11 (I 63 Laourdas-Westerink) (addressed Εὐσταθίῳ πατριάρχῃ Ἀντιοχείας). He formerly served under the metropolitan bishop of Tyre (Basilios) and after the death of the patriarch Iob 1 he was one of the rival candidates for the see of Antioch; he was the rival of Nikolaos 78: Mich. Syr. III 98. In c. 860 the patriarchate of Antioch was vacant and was under the administration of the synkellos Anonymus 602. See further the discussion in PmbZ 1797.
