Nikolaos 78 became patriarch of Antioch in the sixth year of al-Wathik (Al-Wathiq 1) and occupied the see for twenty-three years: Eutychius Alex. 1135D. He was the patriarch of Antioch in the mid ninth century and the rival of Eustathios 48; cf. Photius, Ep. 289 (III 121 Laourdas- Westerink), and see Anonymus 602 and Eustathios 48.
