Iob was patriarch of Antioch; he received from Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite) a copy of the same letter which Theodoros 15 sent to the patriarch of Alexandria (in 818), describing the persecution under Leo V (Leo 15) and asking for his prayers and for help for the victims: Theod. Stud., Ep. 275 (ἡ αὐτὴ δὲ ἐπιστολὴ καὶ πρὸς τὸν τῆς Ἀντιοχείας πατριάρχην ἀπεστάλη). During the persecution under Leo V (Leo 15) Theodoros 15 wrote to the four patriarchs describing the persecution and asking them to help the victims: Vita B Theod. Stud. 289C (τοὺς τέσσαρας πατριάρχας), Vita C Theod. Stud. §45, p. 285, Vita A Theod. Patriarch of Antioch; he crowned the rebel Thomas the Slav (Thomas 7) emperor there in 821: Theoph. Cont. II 12 (p. 55) (τοῦ τὸν ἐν Ἀντιοχείᾳ θρόνον τηνικαῦτα μεταποιησαμένου Ἰακώβ), Zon. XV 22. 29 (τοῦ τότε τὸν θρόνον αὐτῆς τὸν πατριαρχικὸν ἔχοντος : Ἰὼβ δ' ἐκεῖνος ἐκέκλητο). Patriarch of Antioch (τοῦ ἀρχιερέως Ἀντιοχείας Ἰώβ); he crowned Thomas 7 emperor with the approval of the caliph (al-Ma'mun 1): Genesius II 2. Cf. also Mich. Syr. III 75, Bar Hebr., 133, and see Anonymus 734. He was one of the three patriarchs named as authors of a letter about the veneration of icons addressed to the emperor Theophilos, following a church council, in 836: J.A. Munitiz, J. Chrysostomides, E. Harvalia-Crook and C. Dendrinos, The Letter of the Three Patriarchs to the emperor Theophilos and related texts (Camberley, 1997), p. 3, title (Ἐπιστολὴ τῶν ἁγιωτάτων πατριαρχῶν, Χριστοφόρου Ἀλεξανδρείας, Ἰὼβ Ἀντιοχείας, Βασιλείου Ἱεροσολύμων. The letter is dated in April 836. Patriarch of Antioch, called Iob, he accompanied the caliph (al-Mutasim 1) on an invasion of Roman territory and was present at the sieges of Ankyra and Amorion; at both places he tried to persuade the inhabitants to surrender to the Arabs: Eutychius Alex. 1134C. The date was 838, when Amorion fell. His real name was Iob and he was patriarch of Antioch from 813/814 to 844/845; Grumel, Chronologie, p. 447. He was succeeded by Eustathios 48 and Nikolaos 78: Mich. Syr. III 97-98.
