Theophanes 52 is named only at Vita B Theod. Stud., 293B (τὸν φιλόχριστον ἐκεῖνον Θεοφάνην). He was an official on the staff of Krateros 2, strategos of the Anatolikon, in 817/818 when he was ordered to inflict a beating of fifty lashes on Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite), then in exile at Boneta, for inducing a cleric from Asia (Anonymus 573) to resist his bishop; he was moved by Theodoros 15's piety and failed to carry out the punishment as instructed; later he was found out, by Anastasios 60, and punished: Vita A Theod. Stud., 193CD (ἕνα τῶν ὑπὸ χεῖρα), 196A, Vita B Theod. Stud., 292C (ἕνα τῶν τῆς τάξεως αὐτοῦ), 293B, Vita C Theod. Stud. §46-47, pp. 286-287 (ἕνα τῶν ὑπ' αὐτὸν).
