Stephanos 48 was a monk; he was the bibliophylax of the patriarch of Constantinople in 787, when he is attested at the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council); he was one of the patriarchal officials who produced and read out passages from the works of the Fathers; he is styled Στέφανος ὁ εὐλαβέστατος μοναχὸς καὶ βιβλιοφύλαξ τοῦ εὐαγοῦς πατριαρχείου or similar: Mansi XII 1023, XII 1027 (Στέφανος ὁ προειρήμενος μοναχὸς), XIII 1035 and XIII 1042 (Στέφανος ὁ εὐλαβέστατος μοναχὸς καὶ βιβλιοφύλαξ), XIII 53 and XIII 57 and XIII 60 (Στέφανος ὁ εὐλαβέστατος μοναχὸς), XIII 89, XIII 165 (Στέφανος μοναχὸς), XIII 176 and XIII 177 (Στέφανος ὁ εὐλαβέστατος μοναχὸς), XIII 189 and XIII 192 (Στέφανος μοναχὸς καὶ βιβλιοφύλαξ), XIII 196 (Στέφανος ὁ εὐλαβέστατος μοναχὸς). At the first session of the Council (on 24 September 787) he read passages from the letters of St Basil and St Athanasios and from the Ecclesiastical History of Rufinus: Mansi XII 1023-26 (the letters of St Basil), 1027-1030 and 1035 (letter of St Athanasios), 1042 (the Ecclesiastical History of Rufinus). At the fourth session, on 1 October 787, he read out from the works of Anastasios of Antioch and Sophronios of Jerusalem and from the Life of Theodoros of Sykeon: Mansi XIII 53-56 (Anastasios), XIII 57 (Sophronios's enkomion on SS Cyrus and John), XIII 60 (from Sophronios's version of the Leimonarion of John Moschos), 89 (Theodoros of Sykeon). At the fifth session, on 4 October 787, he read from the Disputation of a Jew and a Christian, from Eusebios of Caesarea, from Antipater of Bostra, from the Ecclesiastical History of Evagrios and from the Leimonarion of Sophronios (John Moschos): Mansi XIII 165 (Disputation), XIII 176 (Eusebius), XIII 177 (Antipater), XIII 189-192 (Evagrios; he produced a copy of Evagrios from which two pages had been deleted by the iconoclasts and showed it to the Council; he then read from another copy produced by the hegoumenos Gregorios 44), 192-196 (the Leimonarion; he read from the copy produced at the fourth session (on 1 October 787) by Eustathios 16, who is not named but referred to as ἡγούμενος τῶν Μαξιμίνου), XIII 196 (he had a further fifteen books available with material relating to icons; Tarasios 1 decided however that the Council had listened to enough).
