Paulos 97 was dux of Iader ("Paulus dux Iaderae"); soon after Christmas 805 he visited Charlemagne (Karoulos 1) with the two duces of Venetia, Willeri (Obelerios 1) and Beatos 3, and the bishop of Iader, Donatos 12, as ambassadors of the Dalmatians; they made large gifts to Karoulos 1, who regulated matters concerning Venetia and Dalmatia before dismissing them: Annales Regni Francorum s.a. 806 (p. 122). In 809 Paulos 97 was commander of a fleet sent from Constantinople to Dalmatia and Venetia; during the winter part of his fleet was defeated in a skirmish with the troops in Commacchio and fled back to Venetia; Paulos 97 attempted to negotiate peace terms with Pippin (Pepin 3) but was obstructed by Obelerios 1 and Beatos 3 and eventually abandoned the attempt and left: Annales Regni Francorum s.a. 809. In 810 he was the governor (strategos) of Kephallenia; he led his fleet to help the Dalmatians when they were attacked by the fleet of Pepin 3 after his capture of Venetia; the Frankish fleet then returned home: Annales Regni Francorum s.a. 810.
