In the List of Old Bulgar Rulers Kobratos 1 is called Kurt and the length of his reign is given as sixty years; he belonged to the Dulo family: Runciman, First Bulgarian Empire, Appendix II, p. 273 ("Kurt reigned 60 years, his race Dulo, and his years shegor vechem"),and p. 277 (for his dates). He became ruler in 584 and died in 642. His successor is said to have been Bezmer 1: Runciman, loc. cit.

His name in Greek sources is Kobratos or Krobatos. Ruler of the Bulgars (and Kotragoi, adds Theophanes, Κροβάτου τοῦ κυροῦ τῆς λεχθείσης Βουλγαρίας καὶ τῶν Κοτράγων) living near lake Maeotis, he died during the reign of Constans II (Konstans 1); he was succeeded by his five sons, to whom he had given the advice to remain loyal to their traditional way of life, as their best guarantee of independence: Theoph. AM 6171 (Krobatos), Nic. Brev. de Boor 33, Mango 35 (Kobratos). The names of his sons were Baianos 1, Kotragos 1, Asparuch 1 and two whose names are not recorded (Anonymus 7 and Anonymus 8). See Runciman, op. cit., p. 17 (arguing that some of his so-called sons were in fact grandsons) and cf. Bezmer 1. See also Mango and Scott, Theophanes p. 501 n. 13.
