According to the List of Old Bulgar Rulers, Kotragos 1's father's reign ended in 642; see Kobratos 1. Kotragos 1 was the second of the five sons of Kobratos 1 who succeeded their father as rulers of the Bulgars living near lake Maeotis; disregarding their father's advice to his sons to remain true to their traditions, Kotragos 1 led his section of the people across the Don and settled there with them opposite their ancestral homes (see Baianos 1): Theoph. AM 6171 (ὁ δὲ δεύτερος τούτου ἀδελφός, ὁ λεγόμενος Κότραγος, τὸν Τάναϊν διαβὰς ποταμὸν ἀπέναντι τοῦ πρώτου ᾤκησεν ἀδελφοῦ), Nic. Brev. de Boor 33-4, Mango 35. Kotragos 1's father (Kobratos 1) and brother (Asparuch 1) (Isperikh) are described in the List of Old Bulgar Rulers as of the race (family) of Dulo (cf. Kobratos 1, Asparuch 1). See Runciman, First Bulgarian Empire, p. 18.
