Hilarion 4 was a monk in the monastery of Stoudios at Constantinople, he became hegoumenos of the monastery after the death of Klemens 4 (on 17 July 868); by permitting the sick monk Antonios (Antonios 19) to sleep in the cell once occupied by Nicolas the Stoudite (Nikolaos 26) he contributed to his miraculous cure; he is said to have been as cheerful a character as his name suggested: Vita Nic. Stud. 924A-B.
