Klemens 4 was oikonomos of the monastery of Stoudios; he became hegoumenos in 868, when he was named as his successor by the dying hegoumenos Nikolaos 26; Nikolaos 26 died on 4 February 868: Vita Nic. Stud. The date of Nikolaos 26's death is in Vita Nic. Stud. 921C. On his third day (7 February) an imperial vessel arrived laden with corn, as Nikolaos 26 had foretold, to alleviate a food shortage, and Klemens 4 praised Nikolaos 26's memory: Vita Nic. Stud. 921D-924A. Klemens 4 died after guiding the monastery for only a few months (ἐφ' ἱκανοὺς τοὺς χρόνους), on 17 July, and was succeeded by Hilarion 4: Vita Nic. Stud. 924A.
