Gulfard 1 was a Frank, abbot and adviser of king Charlemagne (Karoulos 1) ("religiosus abba et consiliarius"); in 773 he was one of the Frankish king's envoys, with Georgios 127 and Alcuin 1, sent to Italy to discover the truth about the seizure of cities by the Lombard king Desiderius (Desiderios 3); they first visited pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1) at Rome and learned that none had been restored; then they left accompanied by papal envoys and visited Desiderios 3 but failed to persuade him to restore what he had taken; they then returned to Francia to report the situation to Charlemagne (Karoulos 1): Lib. Pont. 97. 26- 27.
