Faroald 1 was the son of the Lombard dux of Spoletium, Transamundus (Trasimund 2); nephew of Wachilap 1; on his father's death (in 703) Faroald was appointed to his post ("in loco patris est subrogatus"): Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 30. Early in the reign of Liutprand 1 (to judge by the place in the narrative of Paul) Faroald 1 the dux of Spoletium seized Classis the city of Ravenna but on Liutprand 1's orders it was restored to the Romans ("Faroaldus Spolitanorum ductor Classem civitatem Ravennantium invasit; sed iussu regis Liutprandi hisdem Romanis reddita est"); his own son Transamundus (Trasimund 3) rebelled against him, forced him to become a cleric and replaced him as dux of Spoletium ("eumque clericum faciens, locum eius invasit"): Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 44.
