Elias 22 was a hermit living near Ioannikios 2 on Mt Olympus; he was asked by Ioannikios 2 to attend Niketas 154 and Eustratios 19 when they visited Ioannikios 2 to report the death of Leo V (Leo 15) and the accession of Michael II (Michael 10); on this occasion Ioannikios 2 also prophesied the death of Elias 22 himself; soon afterwards Elias 22 fell ill; he was taken to the house of a lady named Leopardina 1 in the presence of Eustratios 19, and from there to the monastery of St Agapios, a metochion of the monastery of Agauroi, where he died: Sabas, Vita Ioannicii 25 (Ἠλίου τινὸς ἀσκητοῦ), Petrus, Vita Ioannicii 31 (τόνδε πλησίον τοῦ ἁγίου ἡσυχάζοντα ἄνδρα εὐλαβέστατον, Ἠλίαν τοὔνομα). The date was shortly after Christmas Day 820, when Leo 15 was murdered.
