Eirene 17 was the mother of Euphrosyne 4: Theod. Stud., Ep. 465, cf. Epp. 62, 458, 472, 482, 506, 510. A nun, she was the addressee together with her daughter of a letter from Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite), written between 821 and 823: Theod. Stud., Ep. 62 (addressed Εἰρήνῃ καὶ Εὐφροσύνῃ μοναζούσαις). She was of Armenian descent, of royal family, and had married a man who became strategos and patrikios (τῶν ἀφ' ἡλίου ἀνατολῶν τὸ γένος καὶ κατὰ τόπον καὶ τρόπον, εἴπερ ἡ Ἀρμενία ὅθεν καὶ ἡ ἀρετή, εἰ δὲ καὶ τὸ αἷμα δεῖ ζητεῖν, ἐκ βασιλικοῦ κράματος; and see Anonymus 582); after the death of her husband she became a nun; she was, according to Theodoros 15, orthodox (i.e. a supporter of icons) and avoided communion with heretics (i.e. the iconoclasts), keeping herself, her daughter and her nuns uncontaminated by the heresy and recent persecution; on her death she was succeeded as head of the convent by her daughter (she was therefore hegoumene of the convent of the Kloubion); Theodoros 15 had not known her for long (ὀψιμαθὴς ἐγὼ τῆς κυρίας), but on her death he wrote this letter of consolation about her (ἐπιτάφιος προσφώνησις) to her daughter; she is alluded to as τὴν κυρίαν ἀδελφομητρότεκνόν σου and ἡ καλὴ ἀμμάς: Theod. Stud., Ep. 458 (written between 821 and 826 and addressed to Euphrosyne hegoumene of the Kloubion). She and her daughter were given words of exhortation by Theodoros to pass on to their nuns, since they were their teachers (αὐταὶ γὰρ διδάσκαλοι καὶ ἑτέρων): Theod. Stud., Ep. 62. Her death occurred no later than 823: Theod. Stud., Ep. 465 (c. 823). She is mentioned in several letters written after her death to her daughter: Theod. Stud., Ep. 465 (τὴν μακαρίαν μητέρα, lamented by her daughter; she was τὴν συνώνυμον Εἰρήνην κληθεῖσαν σου μητέρα), Ep. 472 (c. 823/826; τὴν μακαρίαν μητέρα), Ep. 482 (January/7 March 824; ἡ μνήμη τῆς μακαρίας μητρός, σεβασμία ἡ κυρία), Ep. 506 (a. 824/826; τῇ μακαρίᾳ ἐκείνῃ καὶ ἁγίᾳ μητρί; on her death she had left her daughter in charge of the nuns - τὸ ποίμνιον - and Theodoros had promised to keep writing to Euphrosyne 4), Ep. 510 (c. 824/826; τῆς μακαρίας μητρός σου; an example of virtue; her convent was in Constantinople - ἐν Βυζαντίδι).
