Baanes 5 was a praipositos of the emperor Basil I (Basilios 7) in 867; Bannes 5 was sent by the emperor Basilios 7 to Photios 1 to demand the documents (τὰ ἰδιόχειρα πάντα) which Photios 1 had removed from the patriarchal palace; Photios 1 denied removing any but Baanes 5's officials saw Photios 1's men trying to hide some sacks, which proved to contain quantities of documents: Nicetas, Vita Ignatii 540C (τὸν πραιπόσιτον Βαάνην).

Baanes 5 is possibly not to be identified with Baanes 6, who appears to have been a partisan of Photios 1.

Baanes 5 was patrikios, praipositos and sakellarios in 872 (or possibly 878, see Haldon, Expeditions, 268-269, following Lemerle) when he remained behind in Constantinople with the unnamed magistros and the unnamed eparch (see PBE II) to direct the emperor's affairs as his representative (ὁ ἐκ προσώπου); Baanes 5 is said to have taken charge of the emperor's duties, while the others dealt with state affairs and the day-to-day administration respectively: Const. Porph., Military Teatises, C 799-807 (Reiske 503). On Basilios 7's return after his victories at Tephrike and Germanikeia Baanes 5 and the master of ceremonies organised his triumphal entry into the city; as the emperor's representative (ὁ ἀπομονεὺς) Baanes 5 was received by Basilios 7 and Constantine his son (Konstantinos 141) at the Golden Gate, with the eparch, where they gave Basilios 7 crowns of gold and of laurel, and were recompensed with nomismata to more than the value of the gold crown: Const. Porph., Military Treatises, C 771-775 (Reiske 501). Cf. Baanes 18.
