Baanes 4 was a Basilikos protospatharios; owner of a seal dateable to the mid ninth century (the forties to the fifties, according to Seibt): Seibt, Bleisiegel I, no. 166. Obv.: invocative monogram of Θεοτόκε βοηθει with the legend τῳ σῳ δούλῳ. Rev.: + - Βααν. - β' α'... - θαρ'.. - +. The name and title read: Βαάνῃ βασιλικῷ πρωτοσπαθαρίῳ. The name suggests that he was of Armenian origin. He is perhaps identical with the owner of another seal, who was a patrikios, basilikos protospatharios and, perhaps hypatos: Konstantopoulos, JIAN 5, 577 (cited by Seibt, loc. cit., p. 309). The obverse closely resembles that of the above; the reverse reads: +Βα<α> - νη πατρικ' β' - α'σπαθ' και . - .ατω. The name and titles probably read: Βαάνῃ πατρικίῳ βασιλικῷ πρωτοσπαθαρίῳ καὶ ὑπάτῳ. Seibt proposed the identification of both seal owners with Baanes 5, Baanes 6 and/or Baanes 7.
